What Women Want From Their Briefcase
What women want from their briefcases is the same thing men want, but with some important differences. They want them to be lighter in weight, easier to handle, better organized, and more stylish. They don’t want to be limited to basic black leather, and they don’t want them to be the size of a suitcase.
While women like the lighter weight option, they don’t just want scaled down versions of the men’s briefcases. They want companies to manufacture items specifically for women. If this means designing briefcases with new fabrics and construction methods, so be it. They also want them to be easy to handle, meaning that padded handles and shoulder straps are basic necessities. Cross-body straps or the option to carry as a backpack are nice features to have. Extendable handles and wheels are also popular, especially if the wheels can be removed for air travel.
Women tend to want more organization in their briefcases. Separate compartments for files and pockets for their cell phones or PDAs are usually considered vital additions. It is even better if there are pockets for wallets and snaps to hold key rings, eliminating the need to carry a separate handbag for essentials. Interior pockets for makeup, hairbrushes, and even lunch are also popular options. Pen loops and business card holders are also nice to have.
Style is also important to women. They want to choose their favorite color, whether it is black, purple, pink, or blue. If they want a whimsical touch, they want to be able to find animal skin prints or interesting geometric designs. Women want a briefcase that is different from the ones everyone else carries and that is not only distinctive, but allows them to express their own personality with the choice.
Women like the option to have briefcases personalized with metal nameplates or embroidered monograms. This makes the briefcase uniquely hers. They also want easy to operate locking mechanisms for those times when they need to secure the contents. Tiny, recessed combination wheels that are difficult to work without chipping a fingernail are not ideal for a woman’s briefcase.
Pricing of briefcases is also important to women. Whereas a man may buy one briefcase and carry it every day for many years, women like variety. Quality, affordable briefcases make it easier for her to have more than one, allowing her to match the style or color to the season, the occasion, or even her wardrobe.
In general, women don’t want briefcases designed for them that are just smaller versions of the men’s styles. They want manufacturers to consider the ways that women use briefcases differently than men, and to design products that reflect the difference. For example, women use shoulder straps on briefcases much more often than men, who tend to carry them by the handle alone. Therefore, the shoulder straps on women’s briefcases should be padded, non-slip, and in appropriate lengths. Fortunately, manufacturers have been paying attention, and many are now designing styles especially for women to meet their demands.
